A multitude of library programs and services have undergone recent cuts and closures. Any one of these are cause for concern - collectively they are seriously harming the ability for people to access information, research, and to ensure our published heritage will be preserved. Please review this information, and after you do, you are urged to contact your local MP and MPP outlining your position.
To summarize, the cuts include:
- Elimination of the Federal Community Access Program (impacting internet and computer access at public libraries and community agencies)
- Severe cuts to Library and Archives Canada (20% reduction in workforce), including an end to the current ILL service
- Elimination of the National Archival Development Program, a program that supports local archival activities
- Closures of government department libraries
- Elimination of two school libraries; in Nova Scotia, and Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board in Ontario.
